Benjes hedges and hedgerows

Why?
Benjes hedges and hedgerows provide a habitat for microorganisms, insects, amphibians, reptiles and birds. They also provide natural protection against wind and water erosion from day one.

How?

  • To create a Benjes hedge, pile up the branches and wood cuttings: instead of chopping up and disposing of cut-off branches from fruit trees and shrubs, simply pile them up in your garden.
  • When planting a hedgerow for wildlife, use native shrubs and hedges (include at least five different species: e.g. dog rose, hazelnut, juneberry, alder buckthorn and hawthorn).
